Difference between cold, flu & COVID-19

While various viruses typically cause the common cold, the flu stems specifically from influenza A or B viruses, and COVID-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Although symptoms may overlap, there are crucial differences among these respiratory infections.

To accurately identify the virus causing your symptoms, specific testing is necessary. While there’s no test specifically for the common cold, tests are available for the flu and COVID-19. Our healthcare professionals at Infusion Works will guide you on whether testing is warranted and devise a tailored care plan based on your symptoms and condition.

Common cold

Colds are milder than the flu, with symptoms mainly in the head and nose like headaches or a runny nose. Adults usually don't have a fever, but if they do, they should see a doctor.

Influenza

Flu symptoms are more severe than colds, often including high fever, extreme fatigue, sore throat, and intense body aches. Flu complications can be serious, even leading to hospitalization or death.

COVID-19

COVID-19 shares symptoms with colds and flu, underscoring the importance of consulting a healthcare provider. A COVID-19 test is the best course of action for cold or flu-like symptoms, as severity can vary widely among individuals.

Cold and flu symptoms
Achy, fever, coughing and sneezing? You’re likely experiencing upper respiratory infection symptoms, but is it a cold, the flu or COVID-19? It can be hard to tell. Symptoms of any of these respiratory illnesses could include:

Cold & flu treatment for children
Children are more susceptible to respiratory illnesses like colds and flu due to their developing immune systems and frequent exposure in communal settings. While they may share common symptoms with adults, such as coughing and congestion, vomiting and diarrhea are more typical in children. Severe flu symptoms in children warrant immediate medical attention.
  • Lethargy or complete lack of energy.
  • Fever of over 102° F for more than three days that does not improve with medications.
  • Fever over 105° F at any time.
  • The child does not urinate for over eight hours or has fewer than three wet diapers in a day
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing.
  • The skin around the ribs is getting sucked in, called retractions, when your child inhales.
Cold and flu medicine to have on hand
While there is no single best cold and flu medicine for adults, most over-the-counter medications offer temporary relief or reduction of symptoms but are not considered cold and flu treatments, as there is no cure for viral illnesses. A few medications you may want to have on hand during cold and flu season may include:

Antihistamines

Cetirizine, diphenhydramine, fexofenadine, loratadine

Cough suppressants

Dextromethorphan

Decongestants

Pseudoephedrine, phenylephrine

Pain relievers/fever reducers

Acetaminophen, aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen
